The Summary Report of “China Bird Watch” 2004 GGF Supporting Fund Project


In the year 2004, thanks to the support from the Global Green Supporting Fund, part of bird watchers from the mainland of China had the opportunity to republish the “China Bird Watch”. The revised “China Bird Watch” continues on popularizing bird watching activities, spreading scientific view of birds, and spreading the bird knowledge in China. At the same time, China Bird Watch make great effort on leading the public to pay much more close attention to the protection of wild birds and their habitats.
The main content of “China Bird Watch” is the collection of the arranged marvelous articles that focus on bird watching written by the birders from all over China. It also includes the important records of bird watching activities, skills for bird watching etc., and also some special bird information, such as the new distribution or the migrating trend of some important species. Besides all above, “China Bird Watch” introduces the basic knowledge of bird watching and useful experience in the wild place, to indicate the protection of bird and their habitats in many areas, volunteers’ activities in the investigation and protection. Most of the readers are Nature Reserve staffs and bird scholars, also including some people who pay much attention to birds. The total number of the readers has risen from primary about 80 to more than 130 till now, 9 from Hong Kong, 4 from the abroad. Moreover, to reduce the cost, the electronic edition of “China Bird Watch” was offered on the web site of bird forum on “World Wild Fund” (WWF), so that bird watchers from any places can either read or download. In this case, the cover of readers far extends the mail.
Up to the end of the year 2004, republished “China Bird Watch” has all together 19 issues. After the publishing of “China Bird Watch”, many readers expressed their appreciation, and many bird scholars sent mails or called us to praise the equality. These added to the influence of the amateur in the bird research area. Our periodical linked up the amateur bird watching and the bird research, so it is possible to do something for the protection and research.

The income and expenses in 2002/2003 is as follows (RMB):
Budget and spending in 2002: 4000 yuan -Xu Yongsong
Budget in 2003: 5500yuan -Wang Ximin
Expenses in 2003: 1 fees for the charging E-mail box and the communication:500yuan
2 fees for printing and mailing:4500yuan
Total: 5000yuan
Balance: 500yuan

In the year 2004, under the continued support from GGF, we would make our periodical better and further our development. The next year, our periodical will be published monthly, on every last Sunday of each month. The number of page will be added to eight with 4 pieces of paper on the size of A4 both sides. It will be mailed out as usual, and the reading and download opportunity will be offered on the web site of bird forum on WWF China.
The complimentary copy sending will be adjusted, the main part will be: 1, the Nature Reserve staffs will be go on focused; 2, more free copies for environmental protection societies in high school and in public will be added; 3, ornithologist, staffs in forestry department and tourism industry who cares for bird watching; 4, bird watchers without opportunity of visiting the web site will be included; 5, our friends from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the abroad will keep on receive our free copies.
The columns will be basically the same, adding some travel notes and articles of memories, including more information that can help to attract more people and help with improving the skills of bird watching, more information related to protection of birds and their habitats etc.
